HALLIE DAGGETT

(1878-1964)

Hallie Morse Daggett was a naturalist and outdoorswoman(USDA Forest Service). In 1913, she became the first female employee of the United States Forest Service (The Wilderness Society). The Eddy Gulch Lookout Station in northern CA stood at elevation of 6,444 feet and was a 3-hour climb from the base. She worked alone at this lookout for 15 years of 4- to 7-month intervals, 24 hours per day (American Forestry). When the lookout was torn down in 1926, she retired. She would go on to build a homestead only 10 miles from Eddy’s Gulch for retirement. A new metal lookout was built in 1958 and still stands today (Holsinger).
