EMMA BRAUN

(1889-1971)

Emma Lucy Braun was a botanist and plant ecologist. She was the first female president and vice president of the Ecological Society of America and the second woman to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. Her sister was actually the first. She went on to become the President of the Ohio Academy of Science and founded the Cincinnati Wildflower Preservation Society (The Wilderness Society). Throughout her years, she created a collection of over 12,000 pressed plants, which are currently on display at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. She never married and lived with her sister almost her entire life. Together, they travelled through the Appalachians and performed research. She completed over 25 years of field work and travelled over 25,000 miles for research (Rowland).
